Articulate Storyline Challenges

Each week the hosts of the Articulate community invite e-learning developers and instructional designers to participate in a challenge to refine Articulate Storyline skills, learn new skills, and inspire creativity.

Creating Interactions with Button Sets in Storyline (Challenge #423)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Share an interactive activity that demonstrates how button sets can be used in e-learning.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

To show how button sets can be used in an interactive e-learning activity I created a multiple-choice quiz where the answers are displayed when a button is selected. This allows the user to see each answer one at a time before selecting their final answer with the submit button. I also created different versions of the buttons in Adobe Illustrator to show two different states (unselected and selected).

*For demonstration purposes the first two questions of this activity are fully developed.

Using Isometric Shapes in E-Learning (Challenge #422)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Create an e-learning interaction based on a 3D or isometric shape or object.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

For this challenge, I chose to explore some of the components of a home inspection using isometric rooms found on Freepik.

I modified the pictures and created a roof for the house using Adobe Illustrator. Then, I used triggers and motion paths in Articulate Storyline to create the interaction for this learning experience.

Using True/False Variables in E-Learning (Challenge #421)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Share an E-Learning example that utilizes True/False variables.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

I decided to create an engaging quiz covering common terms and phrases used in commercial kitchens for this challenge. At the beginning of the quiz, I utilized a True/False variable to allow the user to choose their head chef for the experience. The chosen head chef appears throughout the quiz on the questioning slides and the feedback layers.

Articulate 360: New Features Challenge (Challenge #420)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Share an example that highlights one or more of the most recent updates in Articulate 360.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

For this challenge I created two versions of a 5-question quiz about honey bees. (My exploration of honey bees came after an unfortunate encounter my husband had with some bees on our property. Luckily he is not allergic and he is okay.) I decided to use the new accessible feedback layers for this project and added background "music" in the form of a lawnmower sound. This was to add to the gamification experience.

In the gamified version, the user will also need to click the honey bees that appear on the screen to avoid them while answering timed questions. The user's final score is a combination of their points for correct answers and points for avoiding the bees.

Go From Flat to Phat with the Floor, Wall, & Baseboard Technique (Challenge #419)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Use the floor, wall, & baseboard effect to create custom scenes for an e-learning example.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

I really dove into this challenge and decided to create an entire apartment building instead of just one room! Since I was showing people at home, I created a quiz about the things people around the world do with their time. The slide transitions are included to imply the effect of moving up an apartment building, floor by floor. The scoring is also gamified and the reward for correctly answering questions is receiving your passport on time to take an international summer vacation.

How Can Designers Use Interactive Videos in E-Learning? (Challenge #414)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Share an example to show how interactive video can be used in e-learning.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

For this challenge I used a video I had previously created which focused on the elementary math topic of Division As Sharing. The original video contained long pauses for students to think about the answer to a question, or asked the teacher to pause the video to allow the students to complete the activity. Through the use of Articulate Storyline I was able to eliminate these sections by pausing the timeline and inserting questions that the user could work through and answer through the activity.

Using Lightbox Slides for Performance Support in E-Learning (Challenge #413)

Storyline Features

Other Tools Used

THE CHALLENGE

Show how lightbox slides can be used as performance support in e-learning.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT INSIGHTS

For this challenge I created an activity based around the user helping a juice shop owner by following recipes contained on the lightbox slide to serve customers. Customers enter one at a time and the user must use the recipe to complete the order. If the order is not made correctly, the customer will be unhappy and leave.
